YPI is proud to announce the appointment of longstanding BRS Director, Laurent Debart, to its Board of Directors.
“YPI offers a unique proposition to its clients over and above the tried and tested services it provides in brokerage, new construction, charter, yacht management and crew recruitment,” explains Tim Jones, CEO of YPI parent group, Barry Rogliano Salles (BRS). “Our luxury yacht division offers clients access to a worldwide network of shipyards, suppliers, marine legal expertise, know-how, and indeed clients, a network that has been built up over many years. Moving into our next phase of growth and development with YPI, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Laurent Debart to the YPI Board in his role as YPI Managing Director and Head of YPI Asia. Laurent has a hunger for doing business. He has built up an incredible network over the years with us, and not just in Asia but around the world. He is key to delivering on our planned growth and client offering over the next few years. We are proud to welcome him on board.”
Born in Spain but of French nationality, Laurent spent over 13 years with BRS starting as a shipbroker with BRS Asia before eventually becoming Managing Director of the regional division which now dominates Chinese shipping. Looking back, Laurent recalls, “I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Chinese from SOAS then spent some time in the French Navy before setting up my own business in Beijing which I ran for seven years. That was a fantastic time. It gave me an excellent insight into Asian business culture as did my studies in finance and business at INSEAD.”
That insight and experience proved invaluable when Laurent finally joined BRS Asia where, together with his own team, he established the division as one of the fastest growing in the Group. “BRS Shanghai was responsible for transporting over 17 million tons of iron ore every year within just five years of its inception,” he says. Today, BRS Asia employs over 80 staff with offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Jakarta and Mumbai. “I am very proud of our achievements there.”
Fluent in English, Spanish and French as well as Chinese, Laurent has a long-held passion for sailing – holding a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore certificate, he has sailed across the Atlantic on a two-man POGO 34 and goes out as often as he can on his own POGO 30.
It was that passion together with his drive to generate new business that eventually brought the Group’s luxury yacht division to his attention.
“In business if you don’t love what you do, you rarely succeed. Working with YPI now gives me the chance to help lead the Group into its next phase of growth with a team who are entirely dedicated and skilled at what they do. With 44 years of luxury yachting experience behind it, YPI has generations of clients whose whole yachting journey has been exclusively with the Group. I am very proud to be a part of that.”
As YPI Managing Director and Head of YPI Asia, Laurent’s role is to consolidate and grow YPI’s presence around the world in key territories as well as expanding the Group’s services and expertise for clients.
“Yachting is a business. It has gone through many changes over the last eight years especially in the service it offers and the way it offers it, but frankly what has not changed is the fundamental importance of using networks, know-how, experience and drive to ensure we get results for our clients. We mean business and I am looking forward to showing YPI clients what that means in the weeks and months to come.”
