GENOA CHARTER SHOW 2015
It might not be open to the public, but the Genoa Charter Show has the most far reaching effect on the revenue generated by charter yachts in both the Mediterranean and the Caribbean thanks to its timing in the year and the quality of retail charter brokers who attend.
“This year saw considerably fewer yachts taking part than normal,” comments YPI Charter
Manager, Alena Zilayova,
who herself was presenting two YPI yachts - the adorable Holland Jachtbouw 33 metre cutter, EMMALINE
and, the largest yacht in the Show, the 72 metre Dunya-built, AXIOMA
. “However it resulted in being one of the most productive and successful charter shows we have had the pleasure of being part of in a very long time.”
“This year, instead of the usual frantic fight to see as many yachts as possible in the short time available, we were able to take more time to properly visit the yachts in the Show,” explains YPI Senior Charter Retail Broker, Annemarie Gathercole
. “We had more time to speak with the crew, sample the level of cuisine from all the chefs, see first-hand the quality of crew service and discuss availability and destinations with the CA Managers. Retail brokers always recommend those yachts they know best,
and this Show really gave us a great understanding of the qualities and experience on board each of the yachts present.”
“The Charter industry is built on trust, confidence and knowledge,” she says. “No professional retail broker will ever recommend a yacht to a client before they have visited it and spoken with the crew for themselves…or at least, had a solid recommendation from someone else in the industry who has.”
For Alena, presenting EMMALINE at the Show this year, resulted in concrete bookings for the yacht, days after the Show closed and increased interest on the already popular AXIOMA. “For us, less boats meant more quality visits and time. It has paid off.”
YPI/AXIOMA CHARTER BROKERS OSCARS CEREMONY
As part of the ongoing drive to ensure the very best charter brokers get to experience the real qualities of YPI yachts and their crew, the team in YPI Charter joined forces with the crew of AXIOMA, headed by Captain Mark Giblin and Chief Stewardess, Suzy Sawers, to host the YPI/AXIOMA Charter Brokers Oscars Ceremony.
“It’s a very close industry,” says YPI Head of Sales, Russell Crump
, “and one that works very well together to help ensure client guests and yacht owners enjoy the very best from it. We thought it was time to honour some of the greatest players in the world of charter with our very own Oscars Ceremony based on the results of voting by the industry itself.”
“Suzy and her team did an amazing job on converting the yacht for the occasion,” says Alena. “She brought in giant Oscar statues, the all-important red carpet, cardboard stand-ups of various movie stars…she and her team dressed the yacht like I’ve never seen it before. And everyone noticed it.”
“On the night we had over 100 brokers and managers on board,” says YPI Commercial & Marketing Director, and MC for the evening, Mark Duncan. “Suzy had organised a live band, DOMINO, from Genoa who brilliantly set the ambiance for the night, and DJ ALBA also a local star, who kept the dance floor packed with music played uniquely on vinyl. We even managed to secure the attendance of one ‘Johnny Depp’ to help us present the Awards.”
In the end there were five winners, those who scored the most amount of industry votes, each winner collecting an Oscar statuette together with a magnum of premium Vodka Absolut Elyx supplied by RICARD SA.
“Our guests and our winners had a really good night,” says Alena. “It was a great way to bring us all together and celebrate what is good in charter today.”

Food and onboard dining takes on a level of almost unparalleled importance for most guests throughout their luxury yacht charter; the experience, competence and skill of the yacht’s Chef plays a major part in the overall success of any charter.
That’s why, every year, MYBA
, the Worldwide Yachting Association, of which YPI is a long standing member, organises a superyacht Chefs Competition as part of the MYBA Charter Show. The competition gives chefs the chance to show off their knowledge and creative ability not only to the yachting industry, but to Michelin-starred chefs from outside of yachting.
This year the Chefs from YPI charter yachts EMMALINE
) and AXIOMA
) both entered the competition. Amidst stiff competition and with an exceptionally talented Judging Panel, it was AXIOMA’s Stephen Paskins, who finally walked away with first prize in the 47 metre and above category, wowing the Judges with his own personal creations.
Competition Co-coordinator for MYBA, Sarah Sebastien
, explains. “We had an excellent Judging Panel this year including 2* Michelin Chef Antonio Mellino
, Owner of the award-winning Quattro Passi
on Italy’s Amalfi coast and Mayfair’s Dover Street; the renowned Thierry Blouin,
manager of the famous La Mère Germaine
in Villefranche sur Mer on the French Riviera, and Italian Judge Gianluca Palmieriowner and chef at the inimitable Ristorante Class on the west coast of Genova.”
“When it came to the 47m+ category, the judges felt that Stephen’s execution of each dish was flawless in taste, temperature and creativity,” she says. “His use of seasonal ingredients was perfect and the presentation outstanding.”
With over 20 years’ experience, Chef Stephen has worked in both Michelin-star and AA Rosette restaurants around the world, particularly in London. Renowned for his creativity with various ingredients and styles, Stephen specialises in classic French and modern European cuisine, taking influences from South-East Asian and Japanese flavours.
Driven to cook using locally sourced and seasonal produce, he has also earned himself a reputation as a very accomplished Pastry Chef, another of his many passions. When asked about a possible signature dish, Stephen has too many to mention. “There is one I really enjoy making though,” he confesses. “‘Fresh monkfish stuffed with lobster, sauté razor clams, chorizo and pea shoots. That always goes down well.”
“The quality of the meals and the service was very high indeed this year,” says YPI Charter Manager for both YPI yachts, Alena Zilayova. “Sarah and Stephen really did an amazing job, not only on their preparation but in their delivery and presentation. Stephen just managed to pip everyone else to the big prize…and very well deserved it was.”
Now only in its second year, the Napflion Greek Charter Show succeeded in attracting over 55 yachts, 99% of which were Greek flagged, many of which are successful charter yachts in the region but not so well known outside of the country.
Given the increasing demand for chartering in Greece, YPI Charter brokers, Annemarie Gathercole and Sophie Aubertin went to see the yachts and find out more about the crew.
“It was a very good show,” says Annemarie. “The historic worry surrounding charter yachts in Greece, is the quality of those yachts and their crew, at least when it comes to the type of luxury yachting we are used to. I was very pleased to see the general quality is greatly improving overall, and there is now a better pool of older experienced captains and, encouragingly, also a lot more younger, dynamic and switched-on crew working on much better maintained and presented yachts.”
“Frankly, without making the effort to go to the Show, we would never otherwise have had the chance of seeing these yachts,” explains Sophie. “There was a nice selection of smaller popular charter yachts like SERENITY, the sailing catamaran built in 2015, and some excellent mid and top range yachts as well.”
“The pleasant surprise for me,” says Annemarie, “was ELVIS, a 28.60m CRN Ancona built in 1976. She was completely refitted in 2014/2015 and is looking great with a good crew. In fact, I have already chartered her for this year. Of the large yachts, the 45m OURANOS was, as always, beautiful with a great captain and crew. And I shouldn’t forget the 52.7m O’NEIRO and BARENTS SEA, which I chartered at the end of last year, both in top shape. MY DARLINGS, a 2014 build, was also looking good.”
“Overall, it was a great Show which really helped us mark out the yachts we know we can recommend to clients with confidence,” concludes Sophie. “And of course those we won’t be putting in our selections anytime soon.”
