“Our business is built on developing and maintaining excellent relations with owners, captains and crew,” explains YPI Crew founder and director, Laurence Lewis. “To us, Captains are important partners in yachting. Our good relationships come not only from working well together but enjoying quality down-time together.”

This year YPI Crew and YPI decided to offer captains a two-day escape away from the stress and deadlines of pre-Monaco Yacht Show preparation on the glorious island of Porquerolles.

“Our CEO, Philippe Hetland Brault, is lucky to be well connected and known on the island,” explains Laurence. “He had the idea to host an event there, one that would bring together people with the same goals and interests in life in a much more relaxed, friendly and simple environment. The YPI Captain’s Petanque tournament added some friendly competition, supported, of course, by the necessary servings of pastis and local wine.”

“What was surprising, and what really added to the event, was how many Captains and their partners had been on charters with their owners numerous times around the island without ever actually setting foot on it themselves,” says Philippe. “Many captains were also playing petanque for the very first time. Although some of them seemed to take to it so well I started to question just how new to the game they really were!”

he two-day escape saw participants battling it out in the September sun for the coveted YPI Captains Petanque Tournament Winner 2014 trophy which in the end, and in the dark, was finally won, (by pure coincidence!), by Philippe’s team which included the excellent Peter Nyman and Carl Westerlund. A hearty local meal with plenty of locally produced wine followed in the excellent Porquerollais Restaurant with all guests free on the Friday to enjoy the island and all it has to offer.

“We trust everyone enjoyed the simple pleasures of being away from the bling-bling just for a while,” smiles Laurence. “It was a great chance to share the unique qualities of that National Park Island together, as well as our own goals and aspirations not just at YPI and YPI Crew but those of our parent company, BRS. It was a few days we won’t forget in a hurry.”

“We are very grateful that so many of our industry’s great captains, people who really make a difference, were able to join us and we were touched by the many, many compliments we received after the event. You can be sure we are all looking forward to getting together again soon. And maybe next time, there will be someone who falls victim to ‘Fanny’…”

YPI Crew and YPI would like to thank all captains and their partners for being a part of our escape. Details of the next YPI Crew event will be announced in due course.
