Series Yacht

Series yachts are just what the name implies: yachts that are built as part of a series. Shipyards conduct extensive tank testing and design research to create a style of motor yacht or sailing yacht that provides excellent performance, comfort, and desirable characteristics. Multiple editions of the semi-custom yacht are then built. There may be a handful of yachts launched as part of a series, or there may be a hundred.

One advantage of building a series yacht is the speed with which the owner takes possession. While a fully custom yacht can take three or more years from beginning to completion, series yachts can often be purchased, personalized, and at the dock within one year’s time.

Semi-Custom Yachts

Series yachts used to be called semi-custom yachts, but shipyards have adapted their schedules to accommodate owner demands for customization. Interior design requests can typically be met, especially if the owner purchases the series yacht at the beginning of the construction process. In some cases, a series-yacht builder can also accommodate requests for layout modifications.

Personalisation on a Series Yacht

There are limitations to the amount of personalization that can be achieved in a series yacht—especially when compared with the blank canvas of design that a fully custom yacht offers—but for many owners, the benefits of a series yacht outweigh that challenge, especially if the series design offers most or all of the amenities that the owner is seeking.

Advantages of Series Yachts

Another advantage of a series yacht is the certainty of its systems. When a builder has launched multiple hulls in the same series, there is a record of performance that can be tracked and reviewed. Any problems in the first builds are corrected for the next builds in the series, so future owners benefit from the lessons learned by previous owners.
Yet another advantage of a series yacht is price.

While a new construction yacht of any kind requires a significant financial investment, a series yacht can often be purchased without the premium that a fully custom design demands. This is a reflection of scale and has no reflection on quality. A builder of semi-custom designs is simply producing more yachts at a faster speed, and thus the economies of scale can be passed on to the buyers.
