Yacht Charter to Sicily & the Aeolians: Suggested Itinerary
Day 1: Palermo – Filicudi
Your Sicily yacht charter begins in Palermo from where you depart for the first of the Aeolian Islands. Filicudi is easily identifiable by its high conical peak and is still unspoiled by tourism. Far from being developed, it offers small villages, quaint restaurants and markets. Wonderful rocky coastal stretches line crystal clear waters that harbour many caves that can be explored right off the boat. The impressive ‘Canna’, a tall pillar rising to 71 metres straight from the sea just off the island coastline, offers spectacular scenery both above and under water. Perhaps buy some local fish for dinner onboard.
Day 2: Filicudi – Salina
Travel East towards the heart of the Aeolians, and the islands of Salina and Lipari.
With its twin peaks Salina is surprisingly green and fertile. It is here that the grapes for the famous dessert wine malvasia are grown along with capers and olives. You may wish to sample the local produce, and a visit can be arranged of the Capofaro resort’s vineyard, owned by one of the oldest wine producing families in Sicily.
Day 3: Salina – Lipari
Continue to Lipari, the main island of the archipelago. The largest and most populated of the archipelago, this elevated and craggy island has spectacular beaches and breathtaking coasts. Lipari is dramatic geographically but here there are also many bars and restaurants to choose from and the Aeolian museum is worth a visit. You may want to go ashore for a long Sicilian meal at the most famous restaurant on the island “Filippino”. The secrets of Aeolian cuisine have been handed down from father to son here since 1910, and the quality and diversity of the menu is fantastic.
Day 4: Lipari – Panarea
Smaller, but arguably the most beautiful of the islands, Panarea offers spectacular views from its stunning cliff-top walking trails on which you can circumnavigate the island in under 4 hours.
There are no cars on the island and the small streets surrounding the port are full of fashionable boutiques, gourmet restaurants and rooftop bars. Many of the holiday homes on the island are owned by wealthy Europeans and it is common to see a famous face at the port around 7pm when everyone gathers for an aperitivo. The 5 Star Raya hotel offers a stunning setting for drinks and dinner and in the summer months, an open-air discotheque.
The surrounding waters of Panarea offer wonderful snorkelling and diving, including the ‘Bollicine’ an underwater ‘Solfatara’ (sulphur spring), which is a very rare phenomenon.
Day 5: Panarea –Basiluzzo - Stromboli
Cruise towards the spectacular volcanic island of Stromboli, passing the islet of Basiluzzo on the way. Rising sheer and dramatic out of the crystal waters, Basiluzzo is a good stop over for a swim and snorkel.
Stromboli is a classic volcano, more than 900 metres high. In ancient times it was known as the ‘Lighthouse of the Mediterranean’. It is the only volcano in the world with regular, constant activity for over 200 years. Viewing the frequent eruptions by day is spectacular enough, but at night, it becomes a totally different and unforgettable experience. Anchored not too far from the island, is one of the best places to enjoy the flaming colour of the magma while listening to the sound of rocks rolling down into the sea.
This volcanic mountain also extends miles below the sea, and for those who enjoy scuba diving, it offers spectacular wall dives. Take a walk and sip on an aperitivo in the romantic, isolated village of Ginostra, which lies at the foot of the volcano and can only be reached by boat.
Day 6: Stromboli – Vulcano
After a leisurely morning, head back south towards the Sicilian mainland. Visit the closest of the Aeolian Islands, Vulcano.
Vulcano is famous for its volcanic mud pools and hot springs, which are believed to be therapeutic, and exotic black sand beaches and clear warm bubbling waters, which make for a beautiful overnight anchorage.
Day 7: Vulcano – Taormina
The penultimate day of your yacht charter to Sicily and the Aeolian Islands takes you back to the Sicilian mainland via the famous straits of Messina to cruise the eastern coastline. Stop over in Taormina, and take a shore excursion into the Sicilian heartland of typical hill villages made famous by ‘The Godfather’ films.
Day 8: Disembark
Disembark on the Sicilian mainland, in Catania.
