The historical and archeological sites in Turkey are often less crowded than those in Greece and in some cases better preserved. Those on a yacht charter in Turkey will be able to swim and snorkel through the ruins of a Byzantine monastery lying partly submerged in the bay and over the underwater ruins of ancient Aperlai. Those keen to explore further inland whilst on a Turkish yacht charter will be able to hike to ancient ruins on the hills above their charter yacht or visit some of the beautiful ports that are dotted along the coastline and sample some of the famous local cuisine.
Having listened to the advice of our most experienced captains and yacht charter crews, and taken on board the suggestions of many of our clients, YPI Group has put together a Turkey yacht charter itinerary that takes in the highlights of this destination. Day 1-2 Istanbul
Embark in Istanbul, taking some time to explore this unique city. Cruise along the Bosphorus, then head into the Marmara Sea towards the Princes’ Islands. (13 nautical miles, 45 min.) Visit Buyuk Ada and Sedef Island, rich in cultural heritage and peaceful, as all traffic is on horse drawn carriages.
Day 3 Marmara Sea
Continue to Marmara Island (65nm, 3hrs15) famous for its marble production, and featuring clear waters, quiet bays and beaches. Make a stop in Avsa Island to sample its famous wine.
Day 4 Dardanelles
Cruise through the famous Straits, passing on the way Gelibolu (Gallipoli) and onwards to Canakkale. (55nm, 2hrs45). Take the opportunity to visit ancient Troy, or stop over at Gokceada Island. (24nm, 1hr15).
Day 5 Ayvalik
Leave early to complete the transit of the Dardanelles passing the sombre war memorials on the northern shore. Continue to cruise south along the Turkish coast to moor at Ayvalik marina that is set in attractive surroundings with pine covered hills (70nm, 3hrs30). From Ayvalik it is possible to visit Pergamum the Hellenistic city famous for its legendary library.
Day 6 Chios
Travel to the Greek island of Chios. (70nm, 3hrs30). Many islands claim to be the birthplace of Homer but Chios seems to be the most likely. Move to a local anchorage for swimming and watersports during the afternoon.
Day 7 Kusadasi
Cruise to Kusadasi (60nm, 3hrs). From here you can visit the famous Greek ruins at EPHESUS (EFES) or one of the other nearby sites. Later you can explore the colourful town with its many shops and restaurants.
Day 8 Bodrum
Follow the Turkish coast South to Bodrum. (65nm, 3hrs15). An impressive medieval castle built by the Knights of Rhodes guards the entrance to Bodrum's dazzling blue bay, in which the Aegean and the Mediterranean Seas meet. Head into the Gulf of Gokova and it’s stunning waters, surrounded by forested slopes.
Day 9 Dirsek
Depart early for Dirsek. This is stunning narrow inlet with high surrounding hills and after lunch continue to the waterside pine forests of Bencik. (60nm, 3hrs).
Day 10 Bozburun
Cruise amongst the islands to Bozburun, passing Orhaniye on the way, an excellent spot for watersports. (30nm, 1hr30).
Day 11 Marmaris
Continue on to Marmaris. The shopping bazaars and restaurants form the backbone of this traditional Turkish seaside town, while yachts of all shapes and sizes adorn the marina, said to be the best in the eastern Mediterranean. Marmaris Bay resembles a calm lake and offers ideal mooring for yachts. (30nm, 1hr30).
Day 12 Ekincik/Gocek
Depart early for Ekincik, where you can explore the Dalyan Delta conservation area, and even take a riverboat trip up towards the ancient site of Caunos. Remain here for the night, or continue towards Gocek bay. (47nm, 2hr20).
Day 13 Gocek
Explore Gocek Sound. There are numerous bays to explore with pine forests all around.
Visit this charming town, possibly take a hike or a meal ashore.
Day 14 Gemiler Adasi/Oludeniz
Visit Gemiler (Island of Ships), once home to Lycian and Byzantine pirates, with extensive Byzantine ruins. (13nm, 40min). Spend some time at Oludeniz, a beautiful anchorage with crystal-clear waters. Two miles from Ölüdeniz and inaccessible except by sea, Butterfly valley is a striking spot backed by almost sheer mountains from which water falls. Even the beach is bounded left and right by vertical rock providing a unique privacy.
Day 15 Kas/Kekova
Cruise to Kas, wedged between the mountains and the sea, and on to Kekova. This is an island, as well as the name of a whole ensemble of picturesque islands, numerous bays and ancient cities. These bays provide natural harbours in all seasons, perfect to enjoy exploring the unspoilt landscapes. Along the northern shore of Kekova Island, at Apollonia, earthquakes have disturbed the land causing some of the ancient houses to sink under the clear water, creating a sunken city. (43nm, 2hr10).
Day 16 Myra/Finike
Cruise towards Finike, passing the mouth of the Myra river on the way. (1hr20).
Day 17 Antalya
Arrive in Antalya. The small old town harbour is overlooked by the medieval castle and surrounded by the castle walls. There are a number of interesting sites in the vicinity, and you may wish to spend an extra day in the region. Depart from Antalya airport for your return flight home. (70nm, 3hrs30).
