Yacht Purchase: Why Buy versus Build

Yacht Purchase: Why Buy versus Build

There are two ways to acquire a new yacht: build new construction, or buy brokerage. For many buyers, the brokerage option is ideal. Yacht purchase on the brokerage market allows faster acquisition of a yacht, financial savings, and a reviewable track record compared with the new construction process.

New construction yachts take time to design and build. Series yachts can sometimes be purchased within a year of ordering, while custom yachts generally require two to three years to complete. Further, if the shipyard of your choice is currently building to capacity for other clients, then you may have to wait even longer for your own yacht’s construction process to begin. At the most popular shipyards, clients have been known to wait as long as five years for a new yacht, from conception to delivery.

By contrast, most brokerage market yachts are available immediately. The entire yacht purchase process, from selection to sea trials, can be completed in a few weeks to a few months. If you decide during the winter that you want a new yacht for summertime cruising, our experts can help arrange a brokerage deal immediately.

FINANCIAL SAVINGS ON A YACHT PURCHASE

Brokerage yachts typically offer financial savings compared with new construction builds. As with private jets, luxury automobiles, and private homes, existing options for sale can often be purchased at lower prices than current-year models.

Financial savings also are typically easier to achieve during negotiations for a brokerage yacht than they are during negotiations for a new construction build. Our experts at YPI work daily to understand the true value of every yacht on the brokerage market, and to help clients make reasonable offers that guarantee real value for any brokerage yacht investment.

REVIEWABLE RECORDS

Brokerage yachts also offer the benefit of having a track record that you can review. For instance, if you are considering putting your yacht onto the charter market, our experts can show you available yachts that already have established a strong reputation among international charter brokers. In addition, a brokerage yacht’s logs can give you a realistic idea of future maintenance expenses based on similar usage.

Our experts at YPI will help you access all available records of a brokerage yacht’s previous usage, including reports from sea trials, surveys, and maintenance periods. We also use our connections with leading captains and crew to collect information that does not appear in written records. Taken together, this information can provide a true picture of any yacht purchase that interests you on the brokerage market.
